  • The health benefits of a vegan lifestyle are becoming more and more obvious. In fact, nobody can seriously argue this anymore. However, this fact gains momentum if independent and highly respected researchers also arrive at this conclusion. As a matter of fact, that’s exactly the case since a study led by researchers of Harvard Medical School found out that exchanging animal protein for plant-based protein has a significant impact not only on someone else’s health but also on one’s longevity.     “The report, which examined the health effects of different sources of protein, found that exchanging just a small amount of processed red meat for plant protein reduces the risk of early death by 34 per cent.

    The Vegan Society’s spokesperson, Jimmy Pierson, said: “Here is yet another major piece of quality independent research condemning animal protein in the strongest possible terms. If you want the best chance of living a long, healthy life then meat has to be off the menu altogether.

    “Plant proteins like beans, lentils, nuts, grains and seeds, on the other hand, are packed full of wide ranging benefits. They don’t just keep us healthier for longer, they are far more sustainable than meat and fish and, of course, they don’t harm animals. This is the basis of our Grow Green campaign, which encourages plant protein agriculture in the UK,” added Pierson.

    Researchers at Harvard Medical School and Massachusetts General Hospital followed more than 130,000 people for 36 years, monitoring their diet, lifestyle, illness and mortality.

    They found that switching between 15g and 19g of animal protein – the equivalent of a single sausage – for the likes of nuts, pulses or legumes significantly cuts the risk of early death.  Substituting plant protein for eggs also leads to a 19 per cent reduction in death risk.

    The research also found a 10 per cent higher intake of meat was associated with a two per cent higher mortality rate and an eight per cent higher chance of cardiovascular death.

    With at least 542,000 people in Britain now following a vegan diet – up from 150,000 in 2006 – and another 521,000 vegetarians wanting to reduce their consumption of animal products, veganism has become one of the fastest growing lifestyle choices.”

Unfortunately, despite info from scientists, nutritionists, environmentalists….there will STILL be those who screech “It’s all lies!” They simply don’t want to know and will happily consume their carcinogenic processed meats, from an industry that is destroying the planet and is steeped in cruelty.

        Too true. Some people just don’t care about the cruelty factor, and then when they get sick with a dozen chronic diseases, they get furious with their doctors because there’s no pill that will cure them.

    2. Excellent point. There are plenty of good reasons for going vegan, but it’s unethical to just make up facts – Harvard scientists certainly did not condemn animal protein in ‘the strongest possible terms’ –

    3. Sarah Guilford-Jones Yes! I’m vegan and was thrilled when I saw this thinking I could put it in my educational arsenal, but then I read through it and found nothing of value in it. Their research only found a “weak” link between animal proteins and increased risk for chronic disease.

      I’ll continue to avoid meat for the cruelty factor and health benefits, but this is NOT going to convince a meat-eater to go veg.

    4. I’m a vegetarian and as much as I admire the vegan lifestyle, it may take my some time to get there, as to eradicate cheese is my real weakness, and the vegan stuff is just vile. My main issue is the lack of b12 in a vegan diet and having to take supplements for it. You shouldn’t have to supplement anything with artificial rubbish for a natural diet

      • Actually b12 is a bacteria from dirt that you would get with vegetables, but as everything is sensitised now days, no one gets enough b12. Everyone should be taking supplements, vegans, vegetarians and meat eaters or you could just drink some enriched plant milk, one cup usually has your daily requirement. And don’t forget to get enough folate in your diet or the b12 can’t be digested

    5. Tineke Rose – don’t forget to be skeptical about these sorts of articles that don’t link to the source paper. Yes eating less red meat and more plants is good for you, which is hardly new information, no Harvard isn’t telling everyone to turn vegan.

    6. We can argue about that at christmas but the point is people should be able to make that decision based on the facts not based on lies. And people who are already vegan should know the facts so that they don’t sound like crazys when they are trying to explain why veganism is a good thing. Making things up is not going to help anyone.
